Get to Know Andy: 2nd Generation Leadership

For our 40th anniversary, we want to capture 40 stories from past customers, members of Team Marshall, and industry partners. We spoke with Andy Marshall, one of the second generation co-owners. Andy shares some insight into growing up in the company and learning about leadership, hard work, and loyalty.

How long have you worked at Marshall? What were some of your previous responsibilities and what are you doing now?

“It’s been 23 years for me. I used to come in when I was a boy with my dad. We would go visit the crews at different jobsites. I learned, at a young age, the value of hard work and was inspired by the care my dad and the crews put into making customers happy. After I graduated, I started to work in the field under the mentorship of a talented carpenter. Eventually, I was able to run my own crew and then I moved into siding for a few years. From there I started to do in-home consultations. That was about a decade ago and then my sister and I took ownership. We’ve been in this role for 6 years.”

What’s your favorite part of your current role?

“My favorite part of what I do now is connecting with people. I really enjoy creating and maintaining relationships with customers, staff, and vendors. I enjoy understanding what drives people and figuring out solutions to help them get what they need. At the end of the day, it’s a people business.”

What do you think makes working at a family company so special?

“My relationships with family members who work here has been strengthened. It’s a lot of hard work, but also a lot of fun. Seeing generational teams work here is also really cool. I think it’s a part of why we’re always so happy when generations of customers stick with us. It’s pretty neat, what we have going on, and we hope that same pride and care translates into all aspects of our community.”

What do you think makes Marshall stand out in this industry?

“There is so much. We don’t take any money until a job is complete. We offer a legitimate 15-year workmanship warranty. We have designated project managers who really care about our customers; people who answer the phone (24 hours a day) and follow through on promises. We are honest and give free estimates, which is down to the penny pricing that never mysteriously changes. And we have comfortable payment options. I could go on for days. These relationships are built on mutual trust. We’ve tried to create a company that homeowners want to work with and that our staff also wants to be a part of as well. I don’t think you can have one without the other, so that might be the biggest point of note.”

What do you think makes a great contractor?

“Um…. I think I just answered it in that last question.”

What’s one of your favorite memories at Marshall?

“Wow, there are a lot of great memories over the last 23 years. Two stand out. The first is when my sister agreed to go on this crazy ride with me as a partner. The second, when my wife decided to join the team. Also, seeing my kids run around the office when they were young and the times my daughter Claire came in to decorate workspaces or file folders (and that’s just one way to think about answering this question). I’m proud of what we’ve built at Marshall. Nobody does it like we do and it feels good to be able to say that. Nobody.”

Thank you for taking the time to chat with us, Andy! We’re so lucky to have your dedication and passion on our team.
